NCACHURCH to begin ESL

This year we are planning on beginning an ESL (English as a Second Language) ministry. The strategy is that local non-English speakers are reached with the gospel through the provision of “bridge building” ESL classes. These classes would operate as a contact point from which people could be invited to SJEC, or any one of our English-speaking congregations.

What is ESL?

ESL is an ongoing community service activity designed to help non-English speakers adopt English as their second language. It does not run as a course that you complete, but as an ongoing bridge building activity between the community that runs ESL and the participants. Those who have run it before indicate that some people will join the class short-term to help them bridge to a TAFE English course and others will join the class permanently as an outlet to learn and practise English in a ‘safe’ environment. A normal class would run for 2 ½ hours, including some Bible teaching.

Why ESL?

For several years a Japanese School has been running in Cammeray Public School on Saturdays. Cammeray has, therefore, become a focus for Japanese people and demographically our local area has close to the highest proportion of Japanese immigrants in Sydney . Looking more regionally, there is an ever increasing population of Asian people. An ESL program is good, well tested way of reaching new non-English speaking people with the Gospel.

What is the plan?

That under God and in order to glorify Him, we (initially) begin ESL at Cammeray on Saturday Mornings in July 2007 while the Japanese School is operating.

Our prayer is that this may be the first of several classes within a network that seeks to reach non-English speaking people with the Gospel. (So please do not put off involvement because of the currently proposed time)

Getting involved?

Getting people praying

The primary reason you have received this flyer is that we would love you to pray. Please pray that we would reach new people with the Gospel and see lives transformed as Christ becomes known among the nations who live among us!

Getting people trained to do ESL

We need many people to join in this exciting new ministry by being trained to teach ESL. The current proposal is for a Saturday morning group, however we anticipate that classes will run at other times in due course. So even if you cannot do a Saturday morning, get trained for this ministry now.

The Diocesan ESL trainer is coming to do training with us on the 5th, 12th, 19th and 26th May from 9am-12.30pm at Cammeray.
